Volunteering Programme
What is it?
A volunteering programme at Headway House providing specialist support to people with acquired brain injury (ABI) who live within the Headway East London catchment area (Barking and Dagenham; Camden; Enfield; Hackney; Haringey; Havering, Islington; Kensington and Chelsea; Newham; Redbridge; The City; Tower Hamlets; Waltham Forest and Westminster).
People who volunteer have an opportunity to meet other people who have been through similar experiences. Participants can hope to improve their self esteem as well as being given the opportunity to test out vocational abilities in a supportive environment without the pressure of a work contract.
Volunteers work directly with the members in Headway House, supporting them with activities such as arts and crafts, reading and crosswords, discussion groups, music activities and playing games. In addition, volunteers are expected to support staff and members in the more general aspects of running the Headway House including kitchen duties and lunch preparations.
People on the programme will be supported by a Headway House Volunteer Co-ordinator who will manage their individual programme and give tailored support to help participants succeed in their roles.
Placements on the programme will last for up to one year. Initially all volunteers will have to commit to volunteering for at least three months for up to two days per week. Following this initial period the placement will be reviewed and continued or adjusted if appropriate.
To access this programme you will need to complete a referral form and have an assessment with the Volunteer Co-ordinator. Please see referral.
