Husky Challenge raises over £840

Headway East London supporter, Helen Wheeler, took part in 250km Husky Challenge across the Arctic from Norway and Sweden. Helen camped in sub zero conditions (-20°), cooked her own food and caring for the huskies. This is the first time Helen took part in such a unique challenge and have to date raised over £840 for Headway East London.

During this time many of my patients have benefitted from the tireless work of Miriam Lantsbury [chief executive of Headway East London] and her team. I have also have the pleasure of Headway members teaching sessions as part of my work training future occupational therapists at London South Bank University.

The trip was tiring, interesting, stimulating, fun, challenging and a ‘bit chilly’ but a fantastic way to experience that part of the world. You are pulled by your own team of dogs and admire the expanses of the frozen lakes and wide open snow fields. You’d have to hang on bumpy forest trials while the hills descents. At times your sledge swayed side to side and even going over! Add dogs that do not know the word “stop”, a sledge with rather basic brakes, camping in tents in sub-zero climate, melting snow for water and you have a sled challenge worth doing.

To give you a flavour of what the challenge consisted of and to say big thank you to all of you who gave a donation to Headway East London I have made up a slide show which is currently on you tube.’
