Comedy Night

SILKY – Liverpudlian-in-exile Silky has been a full time comedian since 1997. He did his first gig in 1994, and his fourth gig (the final of the 1995 BBC New Comedy Awards alongside Lee Mack, Daniel Kitson and Julian Barratt) was shown on BBC1′s Stand-Up Show. Other awards he has failed to win include the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year (prize-winning runner-up 2000), the Liverpool Echo Arts and Entertainment Award (the only person to be nominated twice: always the sodding bridesmaid), the Perrier Best Newcomer (not even nominated for that one), the Time Out Award (didn’t get entry form in on time), the F.A. cup (not a football team), numerous Academy Awards, and so on. The list gets longer every day. He did, however, win the 2000 BAF ‘Out There’ award for Artistic Courage, for a show at the Bakewell Arts Festival, where they were genuinely expecting folk music.

SILKY: Criminally Underrated. ‘It turns out the man just has an overwhelming nose for mischief and trouble… the entire show went hilariously off kilter as Silky just went where the evening took him. It was fascinating to see how he willingly, joyously, threw himself into the bear pit and revelled in living on his wits for the entire hour.. he’s not pushy or hardfaced at all – just very mischievous. Watching him deal with it all – and stay afloat throughout, although there were some scary moments – was stand up in its purest, rawest form and it was amazing to watch. One of the bravest and most unusual sets of the festival.’ Daily Post, Liverpool

DUNCAN OAKLEY – With musical skills that would easily fit into many rock bands, Duncan Oakley performs an infectious mix of musical comedy and stand up with one of his trusty guitars – Maurice (Fender Strat), No.7 (acoustic) or The Lezza (his Les Paul) by his side. With an eye and ear for the silly, rude, playful and downright irritating occurrences of life, Duncan musters up songs that don’t just make you laugh, they bury into the recesses of your mind and find you humming a tune with a smile on your face 3 days later, confused and wondering where it’s come from.

“Unlike some musical comics who rely on a guitar to get them through, Oakley’s routine deftly mixes the tunes with the stand-up” City Life Magazine

THE SILKY PAIR is Kathryn Bond and Lorna Shaw who met and graduated at Bretton Hall in 2005 with a degree in Theatre Acting and are in no way related to Silky (see above). They have recently debuted there first full hour long show The Reunion at The Camden Head as part of The Camden Fringe fest 2009. They sold out each night and have since performed a snappy version of the show for stand-up gigs.

“Lorna Shaw and Kathryn Bond shone brightly as two haughty journalists Sue and Auds who club together to deliver a reality documentary. Desperate to sniff out some grabbing stories to hook their viewers, the scurrilous pair jostled at madcap velocity, playing all manner of characters. Off-the-wall and gagged up to the max, it was a hilarious, fast-paced hour in which the wacky pair, who rarely paused for breath, impressed a packed house.” Camden New Journal 13 August 2009.
