About acquired brain injury

Medical improvements in the last thirty years have dramatically improved survival rates for brain injury.

The Department of Health estimates that in the UK there are over 420,000 people living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and that there are now 33,000 people under the age of 65 who survive a stroke each year. Approximately 50,000 brain injury survivors live in London alone. Research shows that most survivors are of working age but as few as 20% go back to their life roles after injury, and that rates of unemployment and isolation are very high. Survivors are also at increased risk of mental illness and drug and alcohol dependency.

The reason for these problems is simple: until now there just hasn’t been enough support of the right kind offered to people who survive injury.
